Summer Beauty Trends We’re Going to Miss

As much as we hate to admit, we only have a few more weeks of summer before we say good bye to sunshine and vacation trips. It’s time to squeeze every bit of summer before drugstores and department store counters are filled with the latest fall line up of makeup!

#1. Bright Eye Shadow: We’re going to miss wearing those Turquoise, golds, purples.. basically island colors on our eyes! Whether as colorful eyeliners or eyeshadows, nothing says summer than bright beautiful eyes. Too bad we have to say good bye when the chilly fall weather sets in.

#2. Braids without looking like a 4 year old. We survived on braids during lazy vacation days! The grown up version is very grecian, relaxed and almost effortless. Especially paired with a trendy summer dress. We are crossing our fingers we won’t look like the little house on the prairie when we wind our hair in braids while fully dressed in sweater and scarf! :(

#3. Summer nail polish colors. Those bright aqua pastels like Chanel’s Riva or even Peche Nacree are what we are going to miss most. Somehow bright, happy nails just look out of place when we are bundled up in layers of sweaters and scarf. Bring on the darker juicy colors of fall please!

#4. Bright juicy tangerine lips.  Call us crazy, but we aren’t exactly getting requests for tangerine colored lips during fall photo shoots! It’s summery, beautiful, fresh and the ultimate symbol of summer. You will be missed, tangerine lips.

#5. Beach waves without looking like a bum. We love the loose waves look without looking like we just rolled out of bed or refused a comb. Only two weeks till summer officially ends, we are going to def take advantage of every loose, messy curl!

Expensive, over the top lashes you want to use more than once? Keep them clean by dabbing them with eye makeup remover. Use a q-tip/cotton pad for gentle cleaning until glue and residue is removed. Gently rinse with water and air dry. Store them in an eye lash case so you don’t end up with lashes chock full of dust!

Easiest way to speed up your morning makeup routine? Organize your vanity/makeup bag! The easier it is to find what you need, the faster your routine be. You can organize them by the order you apply too.

Summer Heatwave: Stop Makeup Meltdown!

#1. Eye Primer Smarts. Don’t just pick one at the drugstore and call it a day. If you really want your eye makeup to last, you have to pick the right formulation for your eyelids. Test drive different formulations at the department store and make sure you ask for eyeliner AND eyeshadow to be applied on afterwards. This way you can see how the eye primer can alter the color/texture of eyeshadows. If you have oily lids, make sure you let the makeup artist know - she can pick one less greasy/heavy but equally affective.

#2. There’s no such thing as a one size fits all facial primer. Pick the right primer for your skin type. Heavier primers made for the winter can just add to the pool of grease on your face.

#3. Surprisingly, Moisturize. Yes, Moisturize! even if you have oily skin. Use an oil free moisturizer at night, the more moisturized your skin is, the less oils it needs to produce during the day to balance the skin’s pH.  A big plus: moisturized skin helps makeup adhere to the skin.

#4. Invest in an oily controlling lotion for your night routine. Try oil controlling lotions like Erno Laszlo’s Heavy Oil Controlling lotion at night. Apply for a few nights and you will see a reduction of oil by day. The less oil, the less likely your foundation will slip off.

#5. Avoid using toners with alcohol. If you use it on a daily basis, you could end up with an oil spill throughout the day. Alcohol dries up the skin, and combined with summer air cons - your skin could end up producing more oil to balance it out. Good Bye Makeup.

#6. Foundations are not year round. If you are one of the lucky, you can stick to one bottle for all seasons. But if you tend to get oilier in the summer, it’s time to get a mattifying foundation. Unlike simply just “oil-free” foundation, they leave a smooth, powdery finish to prevent melt off so you don’t have to always use loose powder to “set” the foundation. That being said…

#7. Use a secret finish mattifying lotion instead of loose powder. If you really can’t stand another layer of makeup after foundation, try Laura Mercier’s Secret Finish Mattifying lotion. This will prolong makeup without the extra makeup!

Makeup Meltdown must: Skip the loose powder in humid weather!

Want to slim down a round face in photos? Apply blush at the highest area of the apple of your cheeks and work your way towards the temples. Remember to use a pressed powder blush instead of a liquid/mousse textured one - they take more time to blend and they amplify mistakes too!

Skincare & Beauty Shopping Tip #1: if you are shopping for acne/wrinkle preventing products, remember to check the ingredients! The ingredient with highest amount is listed first, the lowest ones are towards the end. Salicylic Acid for acne? Make sure it’s listed first.
Old sparkly drugstore nail polish brought on a whim? Before tossing it with disgust or retiring to your little sister, use it on just the tips of well manicured nails! Gives a summery look without screaming cheap or gaudy. After all, who can resist fun sparkly purples on a day at the beach?

The Gloss Check Up Check ListThe temperature is rising and the humidity can be a breeding ground for bacteria in old glosses, especially pretty ones with stick application. Years of double dipping with saliva mixed in can make your glosses downright disgusting. It’s time to bust open that overflowing makeup bag and do a summer gloss checkup! After all, there’s no better excuse to stock up on new glosses right? Check for the following before tossing:
Weird smells or if the original scent is out of place
If the texture is thicker or thinner than usual.
Chunks or flakes of color stuck to the sides or bottoms of the tube
Extra dryness - think of what an old tube of mascara looks like
Separation. If the color and the oils separate inside and require some shaking before use.
