Want to slim down a round face in photos? Apply blush at the highest area of the apple of your cheeks and work your way towards the temples. Remember to use a pressed powder blush instead of a liquid/mousse textured one - they take more time to blend and they amplify mistakes too!

Skincare & Beauty Shopping Tip #1: if you are shopping for acne/wrinkle preventing products, remember to check the ingredients! The ingredient with highest amount is listed first, the lowest ones are towards the end. Salicylic Acid for acne? Make sure it’s listed first.

Hangover Beauty Recovery

School’s finished & summer’s just around the corner..meaning long nights out, beach bonfires, and chatting with friends till dawn.. and yes, a couple of margaritas thrown in the mix. But we still have to get up for that 9am office meeting, summer classes or simply breakfast with grandma - so it does help to look a little less miserable!

Here are a few items to keep on your vanity (or fridge) to hide that hangover!

#1. Place Makeup Removing Towelettes & Acne Gel on the nightstand. We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again: always remove makeup before passing out! Leaving it on ages skin over time and makes it look like hell the next day - especially if you have combo/oily skin! So do a quick wipe and spot treat with a gentle medicated acne gel.

#2. Get rid of hangover dead skin. Alcohol is VERY drying and makes the skin look blah and tired the next day. If you have dry to normal skin slather on H20 Face Oasis as an overnight facial mask so you won’t be fighting flakes during your makeup routine. Keep a moisturizing lip balm beside your bed stand and do a quick swipe on your lips before conking out. The key is: keep essentials close to the bed as possibleso you won’t be too lazy to do it.

#3. Keep Eye Cooling Mask in the Freezer or use a refrigerated eye gel. Grab your cooling eye mask when you are in the kitchen trying to keep the munchies at bay. Lay down in bed with the cooling eye mask - it’s okay to doze off. The key here is to depuff your under eyes so it makes it easier to cover dark circles with concealer the next day.

#4. The morning after makeup: Hydrating Elixer, Primer, yellow concealer and multi-colored highlighting pressed powder. Sounds like a mouthful - but if you truly want to hide a bad hangover, have these in your makeup bag. Makeup Forever’s Hydrating Elixer will hide flakes caused by drinking alcohol, swipe of heavy duty yellow concealer will help with covering under eye circles in a rush, and yes, a mult-colored highlighting powder will make you look pop n’ fresh.

#5. Get Smart Water with Electrolytes. Take a huge bottle of Smart Water on the way to the office or class. Drinking water with electrolytes will help decrease the side effects of a hangover throughout the day. So drink up so you will feel better - and it will definitely show on your face too!

Top Performers: Moisturizers for Sexy Skin

There are many times where we showed up at the client’s and to find an unhappy bride or teary 18 year old in her prom dress. Culprit? Acne? Acne Scars? Oily Skin? Not really. Usually we find skin that’s itchy, red, and downright flakey after long term use of acne products, a bad facial or simply, neglect.

Check out top moisturizers we recommend so you can wake up to smooth, perfectly moisturized skin - sans oiliness. Smooth makeup application here we come!

#1. Biotherm Aqua Source. A great super absorbent gel moisturizer perfect for semi-dry patches. Non-greasy and doesn’t break us out. A great balance away from harsh acne products. For the normal to dry skin: get the one in the pink jar for deeper hydration. Our only gripe: some maybe sensitive to Biotherm’s signature scent!

#2. H20 Face Oasis.  Another gel moisturizer that’s super absorbent and doesn’t feel oily upon application. Perfect for dry, red, itchy cheeks! Doubles as a mask, but can be applied overnight for extra moisture! The best part: doesn’t break us out. If you have very sensitive skin, make sure you try before buy - the scent maybe irritating.

#3. Clarins HydraQuench. Creamy moisturizer for the worse case painful flakiness before seeing a derm. Smothers dry cheeks overnight instantly! For combination skin, make sure you buy HydraQuench for oily skin, it’s less heavier on the skin - just make sure you don’t apply over t-zones.. you may find some blackheads the next day! Overall, did not cause acne but oilier than H20 & Biotherm.

Super dry, flakey skin from using harsh acne fighting products?  We all know it’s a pain to smooth flakes with makeup: the silicon based primers, day time moisturizers, moisturizing foundations - if all these fail, behold MAKE UP FOR EVER’S HD Hydrating Elixir. Absorbs quickly, non-greasy, oil-free & Paraben free. Apply before using a primer to get a flake-free finish!

High Definition Makeup

We’ve all been there: we glam up for a night out with friends thinking we have sponged and dabbed our way to perfect, glowing skin. When the photos are posted on FB the day after, you cringe - every pore, pimple you thought were hidden now looked like the bad side of the moon on your friend’s Sony DSLR.

Enter high definition makeup. Is it really worth the try? One of our makeup artists cracked open the highly touted bottle of Makeup Forever’s High Definition Foundation and spill:

PROs:

  • Plenty of color selection - you are bound to find the perfect color match.
  • the biggest difference we noticed between regular foundation and HD: it’s the cure to bad lighting. your foundation looks smooth (at least from an arm’s length)  from penetrating sunlight and harsh office fluorescents.
  • pigments are finely milled; tones down redness and fills in large pores easily
  • looks very natural & picture perfect in photos
  • Did not break us out and doesn’t make our faces oily in humidity
  • velvety smooth matte finish. Doesn’t look cakey if you take the time to blend with an angled sponge

CONs:

  • Light to medium coverage: you still need a great concealer or time building extra coverage.
  • formula takes more time to blend, not a “slap it on and go in the morning” kinda foundation.
  • worse nightmare for dry, flakey skin. looks beautiful (again, from an arm’s length and in photos) but up close the foundation sticks and outlines every flake.
  • this is not a foundation that you can get away with blending with hands - using a sponge is an absolute must.
  • takes time to “settle into pores” like a primer. Sounds strange, but take the time to build coverage gradually so it won’t cake.

Note: makeup artists don’t believe high def is always better than regular makeup. In general, good technique and quality makeup is enough for photoshoots.

Karebrush Undercover: Derma Rollers Revealing Beautiful Skin!

What: At home Derma Rollers aka Dry Needling or Micro-Needling you see at the dermatologists office. Think a roller that comes in different needle lengths.

How: Stimulates collagen & helps skincare products penetrate better. Helps fade acne scars, fine lines, and yes, cellulite. Think even, beautiful skin - or at least skin that doesn’t require much foundation ♥ Best of all, it’s FDA approved!

Where: Our makeup artists ended up settling with the Leaf & Rusher 0.18mm Derma Roller from the skinstore.com after viewing suspicious looking dermarolls on Ebay. Since Leaf & Rusher is a Skincare clinic in Beverly Hills - why not?  Only stainless steel rollers - no rusty pricks in our pores for us!

Results: Derma roller was used 4 times, 5min each for the past two months. H20 Face Oasis or Mederma was applied after rolling upwards on the skin. The verdict? skin was softer, smoother, scars were flatter and lighter! We used a lot less makeup after two months of using the roller - really made our morning makeup routine a breeze. Highly recommended if you have large pores and lots of acne scars.

Side Effects: Skin gets dry and red the next day after using, to the point where parts of it had rough dead skin patches. We recommend using a moisturizing mask for those rough patches and BB Foundation Cream for makeup if things get worse. Hang in there, it’s worth it afterwards!!
