Summer Heatwave: Stop Makeup Meltdown!

#1. Eye Primer Smarts. Don’t just pick one at the drugstore and call it a day. If you really want your eye makeup to last, you have to pick the right formulation for your eyelids. Test drive different formulations at the department store and make sure you ask for eyeliner AND eyeshadow to be applied on afterwards. This way you can see how the eye primer can alter the color/texture of eyeshadows. If you have oily lids, make sure you let the makeup artist know - she can pick one less greasy/heavy but equally affective.

#2. There’s no such thing as a one size fits all facial primer. Pick the right primer for your skin type. Heavier primers made for the winter can just add to the pool of grease on your face.

#3. Surprisingly, Moisturize. Yes, Moisturize! even if you have oily skin. Use an oil free moisturizer at night, the more moisturized your skin is, the less oils it needs to produce during the day to balance the skin’s pH.  A big plus: moisturized skin helps makeup adhere to the skin.

#4. Invest in an oily controlling lotion for your night routine. Try oil controlling lotions like Erno Laszlo’s Heavy Oil Controlling lotion at night. Apply for a few nights and you will see a reduction of oil by day. The less oil, the less likely your foundation will slip off.

#5. Avoid using toners with alcohol. If you use it on a daily basis, you could end up with an oil spill throughout the day. Alcohol dries up the skin, and combined with summer air cons - your skin could end up producing more oil to balance it out. Good Bye Makeup.

#6. Foundations are not year round. If you are one of the lucky, you can stick to one bottle for all seasons. But if you tend to get oilier in the summer, it’s time to get a mattifying foundation. Unlike simply just “oil-free” foundation, they leave a smooth, powdery finish to prevent melt off so you don’t have to always use loose powder to “set” the foundation. That being said…

#7. Use a secret finish mattifying lotion instead of loose powder. If you really can’t stand another layer of makeup after foundation, try Laura Mercier’s Secret Finish Mattifying lotion. This will prolong makeup without the extra makeup!

Makeup Meltdown must: Skip the loose powder in humid weather!

Old sparkly drugstore nail polish brought on a whim? Before tossing it with disgust or retiring to your little sister, use it on just the tips of well manicured nails! Gives a summery look without screaming cheap or gaudy. After all, who can resist fun sparkly purples on a day at the beach?

The Gloss Check Up Check ListThe temperature is rising and the humidity can be a breeding ground for bacteria in old glosses, especially pretty ones with stick application. Years of double dipping with saliva mixed in can make your glosses downright disgusting. It’s time to bust open that overflowing makeup bag and do a summer gloss checkup! After all, there’s no better excuse to stock up on new glosses right? Check for the following before tossing:
Weird smells or if the original scent is out of place
If the texture is thicker or thinner than usual.
Chunks or flakes of color stuck to the sides or bottoms of the tube
Extra dryness - think of what an old tube of mascara looks like
Separation. If the color and the oils separate inside and require some shaking before use.

Old roll on lip gloss ball stuck or rolling extra slow? Flip it upside down for few minutes, the gloss will coat and lubricate the sides of the ball for extra ease of use! ♥

Baked Eyeshadow Tip: Make sure you use more of a creamy eyeshadow primer instead of a silicon one before applying baked eyeshadow. Unlike regular eyeshadows, baked ones stick to creamier bases better for a longer lasting pop of color! Just Make sure the base dries before applying - you don’t want that ‘balling up’ affect. Summer Essential: Urban Decay Naked Palette!

Need a makeup summer getaway? Ditch those bland everyday neutrals and slip into something more exciting - Naked from Urban Decay! An every artist must-have for the everyday eyes with a pop! Best of all, it’s now finally sold @ Sephora in Vancouver! We got ours from Sephora Metrotown in Burnaby.

PROS:

  • Contains 12 neutral (with a dose of quality shimmer) eyeshadows and their cult primer potion + Good Karma Eye shadow brush with Mirror
  • Encased in an ultra sleek chocolate velvet case for easy carry on
  • Great for summer vacations and impromptu road trips - no more packing multiple eyeshadows and brushes, just take this and go! Has enough colors for any even and it doesn’t hurt that it has a mirror too!
  • Colors are universally flattering
  • Easy to blend & highly pigmented
  • Effortless smokey eye with their Dark Horse shadow! Looks mute n’ dark on the palette but when brushed on - it’s ultra sexy!
  • Create a variety of looks in one palette, no complaints on any of the shadows. So you get more bang for your buck!

CONS:

  • Because the packaging is velvet, it tends to collect hair or loose eyeshadow powder - so it’s easy to look like a fuzzy mess. Keep it clean!
  • Gold letters may chip off with a lot of bump n’ grind, so pack it well when traveling!
  • Not for someone who needs a vibrant look - all these shadows are soft n’ subtle and may require a heavy hand if you want to add more intensity
  • May not be the best if you have dark skin since the colors are so soft you might end up with a hint of shimmer instead! Once again - don’t be afraid to pile it on if your skin is on the darker side.
